Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Maria Gabriel, accompanied by the Ambassador of Bulgaria to the USA, Mr. Georgi Panayotov, scheduled her working agenda during her official visit and visited the Bulgarian School “Hristo Botev” in Washington.

She toured the school facilities and talked with students and teachers from all classes. She also met with parents who attended the first parent-teacher meeting of the year.

Maria Gabriel answered many questions and acquainted parents with future initiatives related to the exchange of educational programs from the EU to children from EU countries living and studying in the USA.

As a European Commissioner, Maria Gabriel is the author of the expansion of the Erasmus program into Erasmus+, which now covers all age groups, from kindergarten to adults wishing to continue their education.

She expressed strong support for the idea of Erasmus+ connecting people with European citizenship living in the USA.

In response to a parent’s question about the possibility of creating an exchange program through which Bulgarian children from the USA could visit Bulgaria in an organized manner, getting acquainted with the history and traditions of our homeland, Mrs. Gabriel stated that this idea is wonderful, and she will work towards its realization through the Ministry of Education and the National Association of Municipalities.

In the classrooms, the Vice Prime Minister talked with the students and was truly impressed by their knowledge of the Bulgarian language.

As a finale to the visit, Maria Gabriel met with the folk dance group for adults at the “Hristo Botev” school and surprised everyone with her dance skills and ability to join the rhythm of various Bulgarian dances.

The director of Botev Academy, Mr. Boyko Antonov, also showed our school’s flag, which impressed Mrs. Gabriel.
